The Year I Turned 18 Blogfest

To celebrate Cally Jackson's release of her debut novel, The Big Smoke, she's hosting this blogfest. Her novel is a NA book and we are to post about the year we turned 18. The post can be about anything from that year – something momentous that happened, what your hopes and dreams were at that time, diary entries, anything that comes to mind. If you could include photos of you at 18, that would be doubly awesome!

1992

According to Wikipedia, 1992 was a leap year that started on a Wednesday. The year 1992 was designated as the "International Space Year" by the United Nations. All I know for sure, is that this is the year I graduated high school and headed across the country to start my university education. I should tell you I was excited about heading to BYU until my mom surprised me with the fact I would be heading out three months before the semester started.

I was still 17 at the time and looking forward to spending all summer with Nathan (my HS sweetheart and now my hubby of 16 years). Needless to say there were a lot of tears and pleading on my part, but my aunt was moving out and that was the best way to get me there.

The summer was spent living with my aunt in student apartments, cleaning a bank (I can't count how many times I set the alarm off!), hanging out at the pool with people several years older than myself, talking to Nathan on the phone, and waiting to get into on-campus housing.

I turned 18 a few weeks before classes started and shortly after the summer Olympics. These "older" (seriously they were like 23 or something, LOL) through me an Olympic themed birthday party before I moved onto the campus.

Notable Events:

February-
  • President of the United States George H. W. Bush meets with President of Russia Boris Yeltsin at Camp David, where they formally declare that the Cold War is over.
  • Winter Olympics in France--remember when we got both in one year?
  • Nathan sent me a rose on Valentine's day to school and signed it "I Love You"
  • For you Taylor Lautner fans--he was born this year, this month, along with Freddie Highmore (I only know this because of Wikipedia)

March-
Space Shuttle Atlantis takes off from Cape Canaveral carrying instruments designed to study global warming.

April-
I attend my Senior Prom with Nathan.

May-
  • Space Shuttle Endeavor makes its maiden flight, as a replacement for the lost Space Shuttle Challenger.
  • Graduation, and said good bye to my friends as I packed up for college.
June-
  • The first World Ocean Day is celebrated, coinciding with the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
  • Two skeletons excavated in Yekaterinburg are identified as Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and Tsarina Alexandra.

July/August-
  • Selena Gomez was born.
  • The Summer Olympics are held in Barcelona, Spain.
  • My birthday
  • Demi Levato was born.

September-
Nick Jonas was born--I think that covers that whole Disney era?

October-
Pope John Paul II issues an apology, and lifts the edict of the Inquisition against Galileo Galilei.
Josh Hutcherson was born.

November-
I forgot--Miley Cyrus was born.

What were you doing in 1992?

  1. Had to live with your aunt for the summer? For a seventeen year old, that had to suck. Cool that you and Nathan remained together and got married.

    1. LOL, as far as aunts are concerned she was pretty cool. She stayed out of my way and I stayed out of hers so it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I really learned to love her and her family that summer. My uncle stayed behind in Kentucky, which I didn't think anything of, clueless kid. They are still happily married even now, but a lot of that has to do with the space they give each other when needed.

And Nathan was always the only one. ;)

  2. Boy your husband is tall. Either that or you are short. But to balance that out, you are super skinny.

  4. I love the color of your prom dress! May I ask what the material is? Most of the prom/fancy dresses I remember seeing around this era seemed to be velvet, though yours doesn't look velvet. I graduated elementary school in '92, and turned 13 near the end of the year. I remember how excited I was to turn 13 and be old enough (by my parents' rules) to drink coffee, and then being so repulsed by the taste that I only drank it a few times afterwards. Twice it was by accident (mistaking the button on a hot water/tea machine) and the other times to avoid offending Bedouin and Druse hosts.

    1. LOL, I'm not sure what the material was. Probably some cotton poly blend, but it has that smooth satin feel to it. I liked how it swished and moved with me.

  5. 1992 was a crazy year for me. I was in 8th grade, and so much happened that year. Love your highlights of each month!

  6. Your post struck me ... we really notice things that matter to us, for the most part. I had forgotten many of those events of 1992. Enjoyed it!
