Musical Soul?

I'm the kind of person that hears music everywhere I go. Every day events bring songs to mind. Someone will say a word and I start humming. In fact, growing up I used to tell people there was a concert pianist trapped in my awkward body and uncoordinated hands. Unfortunately, we did not own a piano and we moved a lot. A LOT, but that is a post for another day.

My fingers don't flow smoothly over the keys delighting the masses, but I've taught myself enough to enjoy a few stolen moments. Music is part of who I am. I love it, all kinds of music. I love belting out Broadway tunes and relaxing to classical music. I'm a country girl at heart with a heavy dose of rocker chick that loves to come out and play. Music moves me. Sometimes to tears.

(I feel I should say I cry when I'm sad, happy, scared, hungry, too full, tired, for two whole weeks during the Olympics, and Kleenex commercials have been known to make me teary eyed. Yeah, I'm a big bawl baby. Ok, back to the post.)

Music touches a part of our souls that can't be reached any other way. Perhaps it is the beautiful melding of words and melody. Whatever it is, I think it is wonderful. Last Friday, I had a few precious minutes alone in the car with my radio. Songs that I've heard a hundred times had me in tears. For whatever reason, these songs touched me on that day and I want to share them with you.

I think this was touched me because I felt like I was living this perfect day.

It was the perfect day,
What I'd give if I could find a way to stay,
Lost in the moment now;
Ain't worried about tomorrow when you're
busy livin' in a perfect day

And this song echos a lot of my inner thoughts and turmoil over the last few years. I feel like I've lost a part of myself, and I want to get back to those sweet innocent days of childhood. I grew up good, I grew up slow, like American honey. I just love this song.
The clip below is NOT the official video, but the official one would not let me embed it. Here is the LINK to the official video. Check it out, I LOVE it.

Gettin' caught in the race of this crazy life,
Tryin' to be everything can make you lose your mind.
I just want to go back in time
to American honey.
There's a wild wild whisper blowin' in the wind,
Calling out my name like a long lost friend...
Gone for so long now,
I've gotta get back to her somehow.
American Honey.
What songs touch you?

  1. I love music, too. There are lots of songs that I can't hear in public because they make me cry, and when I'm depressed a certain list of about 120 songs is sure to bring me back to happiness.

Besides, giving up music was the hardest part in making time to write. I used to play the guitar and had started playing the harp, but my schedule is so full that I didn't have the time to do *everything* properly, and now I haven't touched the instruments in almost 2 years. (I used to play in public, even the harp on one memorable evening.) I am still hoping I'll find some time to take up playing again once I got everything sorted out, studies and 2 jobs and everything...

  2. I love music to utter distraction at times. When I'm writing, I usually have the headphones on to keep out distractions (like the TV), and my wife gets miffed at me for having the volume up so loud I can't hear her....

Ah, well. 'Tis the price I pay for the feeling of being swept away by music and words. Lovely post, good lady.

  3. There're so many songs that touch me, but it depends on my mood at the time.

Congrats on winning LiLa's contest! I'm soooo jealous. :D

  4. Stina, I won something? *runs to look*

I won something! Books! Lots of books and one is signed! Thanks for the heads up.

Diandra, I never know when a song is going to hit me. Sometimes I can listen to music while writing, but other times I can't. I've started collecting some songs that "feel" a certain way without words. The only playlist I've made are battle songs, but sometimes music can help me connect with the emotion behind the scene. I hope you get to play again soon.

Simon, my good man, I think I might have a crush on you. I enjoy your blog so much, and when you comment on mine I can't help but think--"wow, Simon liked that post. Must have done something right today." Sometimes I have to go to sleep with my ipod to turn off the voices. My hubby DOES NOT like that. I tell him he should give me something else to think about.

  5. I love listening to music, although I'm not at all musical. I came over to your blog from Susan's and I love that Lady Antebellum song.

  7. Brilliant tunes you got there :~D

I think music is my second biggest love to literary stuff :~) so I completely understand!

Hmmm, well this is entirely typical but I happen to love a Snow Patrol and all their songs. There's something about them that really moves me. I think it's because their great ones make me want to cry AND smile. I switch from thinking they're heartbreaking to happy all the time (prime example Chasing Cars - gets me all the time) :~)

OOOOH, congrats!! Yay for winning all those books!

  10. I like the CD of U2's best songs like "The Streets Have no Name." They seem to energize the creative impulses.

  12. I hear stories everywhere I go, much like you hearing music. I even find that whenever I'm listening to music I hear the story that goes with it, even when their aren't words.
