Birth of a Novel Blog Chain Week 1

Today is our first Birth of a Novel blog chain. Thanks to Elizabeth Poole for coming up with the idea. As you can see, I'm doing the Nano version (need not play to take part in this blog chain, BTW, so sign up if you want to join. Email me and I'll put you on the list.)

For my first entry, I'll be filling you in on my goals for Nanowrimo, and telling you a bit more about my chosen project for the month.

My goal for Nano is to get the complete draft of that summer  novel I never wrote on paper. That will be at least 50K. I'm aiming for about 75K for the finished project. This will be my first YA Urban Fantasy, so wish me luck! The idea has been stewing for a year now.

How about my back jacket blurb?

Everything you've ever heard about faeries is a lie.
Lies they told to keep us from learning the truth.
The truth? They live among us, sentenced to watch over and nurture their greatest mistake.
Us.
Ryanne never believed in faerie tales, and yet all the eyes of the Fae are watching her.
And they hope she will be the one to set them free.
And some of the images I chose as inspiration?

And there will be Celtic flavors throughout. Imagine a garden laid out in the Five-fold design.

  2. Sounds like a fun book. I saw a movie that kinda had this theme. I can't remember what it was called right now. A kid and his twin brother move to this house and find a book penned by his uncle that shows fairies are real. Then of course there's a bad fairy that they need to defeat called the ogre. It was kind of fun.

  9. @Michael That would be the Spiderwick Chronicles.

I haven't written my post yet but I'm still actually typing up the words I wrote while I was at school and catching up on blog posts, then it will be up. I promise!

Love the back cover blurb and the pictures.

  10. I absolutely love love love fairies! I collect fairy statues, I have fairy dolls, a fairy on my browser and a fairy as my background! Have you ever read the book, War of the Flowers by Tad Williams? It is one of my favorite adult fairy books! I love several artists that do fairies also, Amy Brown, Jasmine Becket-Griffith (she has more of a goth tone to her fairies), Jessica Galbreth, and of course David Delamare and Brian Froud.

Looking forward to hearing about your fairy adventure! Sounds like a great story so far.

  11. Good luck! I have to admit I'm not so into faries BUT having said that I kind of got a little goosepimpling when reading the blurb. Haha. I really like it. I love the idea that it's a punishment to watch over humans. Brilliant!

  12. Hey Charity! The first one, Tad Williams is the only author, the others draw pictures of fairies. Some of them have a different take on fairies, Its worth checking out if you have a little time. One of my favorite pictures is

I have that hanging on my wall. (I have a few Amy Browns on my walls too)

  13. I've never read a faerie story before because they've never really interested me, but you've definitely drawn me in with your blurb. Perhaps yours will be the first I read! :-)
