Birth of a Novel Week 7

Week 7

  • Every Friday post a quick update on how you're doing on your writing projects.
  • It can be combined with Camp Nano or whatever personal goals you've set.
  • All you need is a line or two added to the beginning or end of whatever post you already had planned for the day.
  • Then visit the others in the list to encourage them to keep moving forward.
Help spread the word so we have more folks to visit.

Is it really sad that I started this meme and am the first one to completely fall apart? I hope everyone else is getting more accomplished on their writing goals than I am.

In an attempt to find the positive, here's what I did writing related this week:
  • A lot of thinking about two of my story's plots and character motivations
  • Wrote about 1200 words on the romance novella
  • Did some marketing research
  • Interacted with other writers (hey, it counts!)
In other news, we close on our fixer upper today. I've already charged the camera so I can record our first moments of demo for you. :) Let me tell you, we are all excited to take a whack at some walls and a particularly ugly kitchen. Let's hope it goes better for us than this guy...

I don't know why I'm even counting weeks any more. Life has exploded and writing is at a dead stop. *sigh*

We are closing on our new home at the end of this month so I'll need to start packing at some point. Although we're not in a big hurry since we haven't sold our old one, and the new one needs some renovating. The stress is probably going to kill me since I'm not sleeping.

Sleep is good you know.

Anyway, I keep day dreaming about my stories as I drive all over kingdom come, but none of it is getting on the page. I NEED it on the page.

Taking notes during the tour.
There were two good writing related things this week. First, I enjoyed a full day visiting a nearby
town that will become the setting for my secret project. My mom and oldest daughter went with me and we didn't worry about when we should go home. It was great! Even though it was so hot that we practically melted, we loved the historic tour. Plus, it was so good to actually be in some of the places I want to use in the story. Now I know what they look like, smell like and how some of the floors are uneven or slant one way or the other. Hopefully, those little details will help the story come alive for my readers.

The second thing was I heard back from my publisher about Talia's sequel. It was good news, and I'll give you more details when they are all official. The downside to that is now I REALLY wish I'd been writing for the last two weeks on book three of that series. It feels like I'm never going to catch up with my personal goals.

Any of you have a basement? I'd like to run away for a week where my family can't find me and write.

No stats this week since they didn't change at all. :(

This has been a hard week. I have not been in a good mood. At all. Usually I try and present the positive aspects of my life online. I mean, who wants to read a downer post? However, there just isn't much positive to say today.

Writing was nonexistent this week. I wanted to write, but it just never happened. Instead I've spent sleepless nights and wasted days. I can't even say I accomplished much in my personal life outside of writing either. It's been a long, bleak and lonely kind of week. And I don't really know why.

Sorry, that's what it's like to be a girl. You can be sad for absolutely no reason. It isn't something we choose, but there it is. This was a week where I felt fat, old, uninspired and uninspiring. Like a failure at everything.

Don't worry, I know that isn't true, but it doesn't stop me from feeling that way sometimes.

Grasping at straws, I can say one positive thing happened this week. I sent my revised manuscript to my publisher. So, I'm not a complete failure, yet.

I hope your week went better than mine. Please tell me about it. I could use some happy news.

Birth of a Novel Week 4

Week 4

  • Every Friday post a quick update on how you're doing on your writing projects.
  • It can be combined with Camp Nano or whatever personal goals you've set.
  • All you need is a line or two added to the beginning or end of whatever post you already had planned for the day.

Help spread the word so we have more folks to visit.

This week didn't see a lot of writing. I spent time helping my daughter get her first job, ran errands and co-hosted for IWSG on Wednesday. Let me tell you that felt like an all day thing. I loved it, but not much else happened on the writerly front until later at night.

Best of all, Thursday I ran away with my hubby. (yep, this is pre-scheduled and it will take me at least a day to respond to comments and visit the other people in the list.) With the stress of trying to sell our house, which is taking Five-EVER (because it's longer than forever according to my kids), we've been picking at each other. We really needed to get away from everything and remember how much we enjoy being together.

I spent one day reading over Demon Rising in an effort to find my train of thought. In the process I deleted a few things resulting in the lower word count. No new writing, but I did have a great new idea for why there are demons on the planet in the first place. Their origin story is still percolating, but I'm excited since it ties in with the dragon mythology I'm building. Hopefully, it will be something no one has ever seen.

There was one new scene for Eleena's Tale. I skipped ahead and wrote the moment she first meets the Tamati. This is the man she's hated for the last seven years of her life, or at least she thinks so. She's confused because he's much younger than she'd imagined and way hotter. What she doesn't know is the tyrant that destroyed her homeworld died months earlier and his son is now the Tamati.

I'm not perfectly satisfied with the scene, but I have to remember I'm drafting not sculpting yet.

Perhaps the biggest achievement of the week was with Search for Knowledge. Although I sent it to my publisher in May, I haven't heard anything yet. You'd think I'd just leave it alone while waiting, but I knew there was work to be done when I sent it. I just wasn't sure what. Thus the desire for feedback. Since then I've received the comments from three of my wonderful beta readers. Two of them in the last two weeks. I spent most of my writing time going through their comments and tweaking the story.

Little things here and there matter! There is now an additional 4227 words. And I've strengthened Talia again. For some reason I want to make her weak and childish in my early versions. She's not either of those, but she likes to whine until I get it right.

What made you the happiest about your writing this week?

Birth of a Novel Summer 2015 Week 3

Week 3

  • Every Friday post a quick update on how you're doing on your writing projects.
  • It can be combined with Camp Nano or whatever personal goals you've set.
  • All you need is a line or two added to the beginning or end of whatever post you already had planned for the day.
  • Then visit the others in the list to encourage them to keep moving forward.
Help spread the word so we have more folks to visit.

This week went rather well. I wrote almost every day. Thursday was spent editing Search For Knowledge because I received two more critiques from Beta readers. Because of the wonderful people willing to read it and give me feedback, book 2 in Talia's series is slowly becoming something I'm more and more excited about.

I love filling in the little gaps to round out characters and plots. There are still scenes that need the edges knocked off, and other that could be sharpened a bit. All in all though, it's moving Talia in the right direction.

Working on edits of SFK is helping me stay grounded in Talia's world and making it easier to keep building her story in Demon Rising. Several times I had to tell myself to stop over thinking the plot and just write. This is a first draft after all.

Monday I asked one of my teen daughters to read the 4000+ words I had on Eleena's story. She's my target audience so I really wanted to see what she thought of the idea. To see if the beginning was enough to pull her in. My ego was bolstered by her reaction. The bit she read ended at the perfect cliff hanger and she's eagerly waiting for more.

AND...

You may have noticed a third counter in the sidebar. Addie's Song gained another 600 words this week. It's not an "official" project at the moment, but one day it will be so I gave it a word counter. A.S. will be a straight up contemporary YA.

Week 1 Stats:
Demon Rising--5475 words
Eleena's Tale--2119 words

Week 2 Stats:
Demon Rising--6718 (1243 word increase)
Eleena's Tale--4823 (2704 word increase)

I had a good writing week. How about you?

Birth of a Novel June 19th

Week 2

  • Every Friday post a quick update on how you're doing on your writing projects.
  • It can be combined with Camp Nano or whatever personal goals you've set.
  • All you need is a line or two added to the beginning or end of whatever post you already had planned for the day.
  • Then visit the others in the list to encourage them to keep moving forward.
This week was not as productive as I'd hoped. We had three house showings Monday to Wednesday, and I never got into a groove. Plus it rained all week. With little sun to energize me, I found myself binge watching X-files and Criminal Minds on Netflix.

It almost felt like I was slipping into a depressed state again. However, I pulled myself together yesterday. I showered first thing in the morning, cleaned my house again (just in case!), and then sat down to write. For extra security I didn't even go into the room where the TV was!

Last Friday's Stats:
Demon Rising--5475 words
Eleena's Tale--2119 words

New Stats:
Demon Rising--6718 (1243 word increase)
Eleena's Tale--4823 (2704 word increase)

That's almost 4000 new words this week. Which is actually more than my goal of 500 words a day! Yay, I did better than I thought. Now, if only I could do as much writing as yesterday, EVERY day. I'd be done in no time.

Demon Rising Details--I still feel comfortable in Talia's world. Connected to her conflict. It doesn't hurt that a couple of people have read book 2 now and are encouraging me to keep working on the next part of the story. The dragons will play an increasingly larger role in the story, and we are finally melding science and magic into one art form.

Eleena's Details--The refugee camp came alive for me this week. It's an odd sort of place that started with a sense of purpose and hope. That quickly fell with rations running out and the approach of the Tamati's fleet. Eleena didn't think she had anything else to lose. Boy was she wrong!

I also played around with making a trailer for it. Scifi vids are hard when you can't draw! Scouring stock photos takes forever and I can never find exactly what I want. Here it is anyway.

What are you working on? How are you going to accomplish your goal?

Birth of a Novel Summer 2015

I haven't pulled this out in quite a while.
Anyone want to join me?
  • Every Friday you post a quick update on how you're doing on your writing projects.
  • It can be combined with Camp Nano or whatever personal goals you've set.
  • All you need is a line or two added to the beginning or end of whatever post you already had planned for the day.
  • Then visit the others in the list to encourage them to keep moving forward.

I'll start with a quick note today.

This summer I'll work on two WIPS: the third book in Talia's series (Demon Rising) and a YA space opera currently nicknamed Eleena's Tale. I've added word counters at the top of my sidebar. Hopefully the need to see the bar fill up will keep me moving forward.

Today's stats:
Demon Rising--5475 words
Eleena's Tale--2119 words

DR will be my writing time novel. ET will be my pool novel. I'd like to get around 500 words a day on each, but since my kids are home I won't beat myself up over it. Truth is I'll probably take turns writing on them on different days. Listen to whoever's speaking the loudest.

What are you working on? How are you going to accomplish your goal?

Vote for my 2015 Summer Pool Project

I need your help! Traditionally I have a "pool novel". This is a project I work on just for fun during the summer. (FADE INTO ME started as a pool project.) Here's the beginning to two totally different novel ideas I have. Please read and then vote for which one you'd like to read more of. Your vote will determine what I write at the pool this summer. I'd also like to know why you're interested in the one you vote for.

Thanks!

Choice #1 Possibly a YA Space Opera
I'd like to find great art to make a trailer, but it's hard to find images that fit. grrr...

I sat behind the med tent on the far side of camp. It was the only place dark enough for me to see the stars. My family was out there somewhere. At least I hoped they were still alive. If only my parents could scold me for skipping classes one more time. I’d go back and be the perfect daughter, or at least try.

“Eleena? You dreaming again?” Harper’s thin fingers snapped in my face. “Oho, you’ll miss dinner again.”

“Ahakoa, like I’d be missing much.” I rubbed a hand over the bristle of hair on my head.

“You’ll get used to it.” She rubbed her bald head too. “Way better than the bugs.”

“I guess.”

“Come on and stop staring at the stars. You’ll never find them up there.”

She was right, and I hated her for it. With a sigh I followed her to the mess hall. We rounded the side of the building. The line stretched past the hall and around the school. The camp was full of refugees. Young, old, tall, short. Some still had their hair indicating they’d recently arrived on_____. None of them could be called clean or fat.

“Bet we don’t get much tonight.” Harper groaned. “TomorrowI’m not looking for you.”

“Sorry.”

We waited, moving forward with the line and hoping for at least a bit of bread to dip in some watered down broth. It had been a month since the last food shipment. Rationing would only last so long.

“When do you think we’ll have to emigrate again?” I asked while watching a young mother with two small children approach from the east.

“Depends. Maybe they’ll get more food in soon.”

The mother had hair down to her waist. Ratted and dirty, it covered the rip in her shirt. She stared at the ground. Her little boy had dried tear streaks in the dust of his face. The girl stared vacantly in front of her. They were all pale, but the girl showed the signs. Swollen tummy, listless. It wouldn’t be long.

They stepped into line behind us, and we shuffled forward another foot.

“Eleena?” Harper elbowed me. “Don’t.”

“Don’t what?”

“I know what you’re thinking. It won’t help and you know it.”

I looked away. Maybe it wouldn’t help, but then again it might.

We finally reached the flap entrance to the mess tent. I heard whispered voices, but mostly the slurps of the hungry. No one looked our way as we took a bowl from the staff. No bread today. I sniffed the broth. It didn’t really have a smell.

“Looks like tonight’s fair is water with a slice of carrot .” Harper took her bowl to our spot in the corner.

The mother and her children passed me. I followed them to a table near the center of the tent.

“Hi, looks like you’re new.” I crouched beside the little girl and spoke softly. Her mother watched wide-eyed with trembling hands. “We have a tradition. New girls get extra soup their first day.”

I poured mine into her bowl.

“Thank you.” The small voice belonged to the mother.

“I’m sorry you’ve found your way here.” I left their table, returned the bowl to the pile and headed to the girl’s tent.

Choice #2 YA Contemporary (no magic! A first for me)

The machine kept a steady rhythm of beeps offset by the swish of oxygen. Mother slept peacefully for the first time in months. Her dark hair would never finish the journey to grey. For the first time that thought didn’t rip my heart out.

She squeezed my hand and forced her eyes open. “What was that sigh for?”

“I thought you were sleeping.”

“I was.” She pulled my hand to her chapped lips and kissed it. “I think it’s almost time.”

“I know.”

She nodded. “That sigh was your acceptance then?”

“Mom—” Now my heart broke.

“Shh, you’ll be fine. You won’t have to take care of me anymore. Maybe even get to college after all.”

“I didn’t mind taking care of you.”

“No, you’re a good boy. You’re dad would’ve been as proud of you as I am. Go to college and make a life for yourself.”

Sweat trickled down my neck and I rubbed it away. “What if I want something else?”

She looked up at me, eyes shining, a little smile teasing her lips. “What do you want, Colter? More than anything else?”

“To sing.”

“Then you sing your heart out.” Another squeeze of my hand, this one weaker than before. “Don’t let anything or anyone stop you.”

“I won’t, Mom. I just wish—” I swallowed the lump in my throat.

“I will. I’ll hear every single time. Believe that.”She coughed and I reached for the cup of ice.

****

“Colter Lee, you get back in here. I’m not done with you.” Aunt Ruth yelled down the hall.

She might not be done, but I was. It had been six months of misery. Ruth provided a place to live, but she thought that gave her the right to dictate every aspect of my life. That had been fine when those details included selling the house in New York, paying the medical bills and moving to Ohio. I even took the job she set up for me working construction.

I slammed the bedroom door and pulled out my suitcase. There wasn’t much to pack. A couple pairs of jeans, four t-shirts and two button-down ones. My boots went in next and last of all, the photo of my parents. I put my guitar in the case and that was it.

Ruth knocked on the door. “Colter, we need to talk about this.”

I pulled the wad of cash I’d been saving out from under the mattress. Six months and I’d only saved a lousy two hundred dollars. Half went into my wallet, the other half into the toe of my boot.

“Colter?” She opened the door and stopped to stare at the suitcase. “Don’t be so childish.”

“Aunt Ruth, thanks for your help, but it’s time I got on with my life. The things I promised Mom I’d do.” I walked to the door and gave her a hug.

“But you’ll lose your job. What will happen when this crazy notion of yours doesn’t pan out?”

“I’ll deal with it.” With the suitcase in hand and my guitar strapped to my back I headed down the stairs, Aunt Ruth close behind.

“I won’t help you if you walk out that door. Colter!”

I paused, hand on the doorknob. It would be easy to stay. Work construction for the rest of my life. Never leave Ohio. But I hadn’t felt a song move through me since Mom died.

“I can’t keep going through the motions and feel this dead inside. One day I hope you’ll understand.” I grabbed my jacket from the hook and kept going.

Last October I played around with making a book trailer for this one.

The Importance of Different Kinds of Beta Readers

Can I tell you how much I LOVE my beta readers and critique partners?
I mean, SERIOUS love here.

I'm sure I've mentioned them before, but if not, just know they rock. Today I'm only highlighting two of them, but there are others just as wonderful. Each one brings a different level of insight to help me improve my stories.

Kathy is my first beta reader. And she is a reader, not a writer. She knows how to get excited about the idea and the potential while still pointing out major character or plot flaws. Do you know how priceless that is!! The balance between building me up, encouraging me, and saying "but this is NOT working over here" is perfect.

She doesn't write notes in the document I send her. Instead, she calls me up and we have a conversation about what she read. She asks questions and I get the chance to explain what I was aiming for with certain characters or scenes. Then we delve into how I can pull it off better, or discuss alternatives. It's really cool. Kathy is a collaborator as much as a reader. And she's mine! All mine, I tell you! *maniacal laughter*

*cough*
After Kathy helps me iron out some of the big picture flaws, I move to my other betas and critique partners.

CD Coffelt (AKA Huntress). She just "gets" me. In fact, we might just be different versions of the same person. I love her stories, she loves my stories. We write at the same level with similar styles. She gets into the document and helps me find the details that I'm missing, as well as some of those pesky punctuation issues that I ignore during drafting. She's a saint for putting up with it actually.

What I love most about CD's critique style is she will comment on "odd" bits, but she will also mark lines and phrases that she feels are especially well written. I'm trying to emulate her in that aspect. Be positive, highlight the great things as well as point out the areas that need work.

There are generally a handful of other people that get to read my "pre-publishable" works. My daughter(s), hubby, another best friend or two whose opinions I highly value (Laura, Kara), and then there is my amazing writer's group. We've been sparse in numbers lately, but man has that worked to my advantage! All of these people help give me a perspective on how the story is perceived by different ages, personalities and genders. I know I won't be able to please all of them, and I'm not even going to try, but it's fun to see the variety of thoughts one story can provoke.

All of these people have helped me tremendously with FADE INTO ME over the last two months. It went from a  49K draft of potential to it's current 58K state. It's not perfect yet, but man has it grown. The characters have come alive. The plot is better developed and streamlined. And the coolest (and perhaps the scariest!) thing? This completely stand alone book developed spin-off potential for one of the secondary characters.

*headdesk* Like I need another idea at the moment! No worries, I've filed it away until I finish revisions on Search For Knowledge.

Do you have betas and critique partners? Who do you want to shout out to today?

Insecure Writer's Support Group March 2013 and Birth of a Novel

Since I'm not going to blog this month, I'm combining my IWSG and Birth of a Novel posts this week. After this, I'll just be putting up pre-scheduled guest slots. You'll see why below.
Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer.

Thank you Alex Cavanaugh for keeping this great community going!

This month I want to get back to work. February was a lot of fun, but if I don't get writing it'll never happen again. The plan is to not blog this month and use that time to do one of two things.

  1. Prepare all my posts for the April A to Z Challenge
  2. Finish the 1st draft of my sequel
So far things are going okay. I've written drafts of the posts through G. I've done a bit of writing as well, however it wasn't on book 2. It was on book 4!

The second to the last scene in Talia's story was really shouting at me over the weekend. In fact, every time a certain song came on the radio I just bawled. Many of you know I'm a professed cry baby, but this song just hit me. I've heard it many times and remained unmoved. But the words sunk in and I visualized Talia feeling them to her very core.

I had to sit and write the scene. The setting wasn't really there, and I wasn't sure how they got to this point in the story, but the dialogue was solid and real in my head. And that's what I jotted down. Over 600 words of this painfully beautiful conversation between two people I've grown to love. Now I have to fill in all the blank spaces in between the end of The Magic Wakes and Here There Be Dragons. My hope is that now I've listened to my characters and saved the inspiration, they'll let me get back to writing The Search For Knowledge, which is currently sitting at 39,200 comfortable words.

However, I keep opening the doc, looking at it, and then closing it. Most of those words are in 1st person and need to be re-written into 3rd to match TMW. But I keep thinking I should finish the story line first and worry about rewriting later. Or maybe I'll rewrite first to get back into the story. *sigh*

Here's where the insecurity comes in. Well, it's more like frustration.

I've suffered bouts of depression off and on for years. Even though my head tells me to go seek medical help, I'm stubborn. I always think I can fix it myself. It isn't as bad as some people experience, and it's mostly in the gray gloominess of winter, but it stinks.

I WANT to sit and write.

My body wants to lie in bed and sleep.

When I'm sleeping I can dream all these wonderful stories. I can live them. I can feel all these emotions. But when I'm awake I'm empty. The only thing I really feel is guilt.

Why?

Because I have a wonderful life. There's nothing wrong with it. I have a great husband who works hard to provide for me and our children. My kids are smart, healthy and independent. And funny! I have friends who love me and support me. I'm healthy. So what's wrong with me?

I think I wrote more of myself into Talia than I realized. I need the sun shining on me, renewing me and energizing me in order to feel whole. It's not even spring and I miss my North Carolina back yard. Where am I going to sit and write? I've got a postage stamp surrounded by a big wooden fence. No trees. (See how much I'm like Talia? I NEED trees!)

How am I going to make myself write when I don't want to do anything? (I'm writing this post Tuesday at 1 pm and I'm still in my pjs--I'll change in time to walk to the bus stop.) My head knows and understands what's wrong and what I should do to feel better.

  • Exercise
  • Shower
  • Accomplish something

So why is it so hard to make myself do what I know I should?

Release Day Follow Up and Smashing Cars

What a fun day I had yesterday!

First I went to the post office to mail 6 copies of my book. There were: 3 paid orders, 2 for the Goodreads giveaway, and 1 ARC for a reviewer. I almost died when I found out how much it was going to cost to mail them. It was almost $8 a piece! Which meant I was losing money. I looked at the lady and said, "It's just a book!"

"Oh, well then you can send it as media."

*sigh of relief* That was only $2.88 a piece. So, if you're mailing books, get the media rate. Don't know why I didn't know this...

Next, I went to lunch with some new friends. I thought it was just a friendly We want to get to know you better kind of lunch. Which it was. However, my host had ulterior motives. As the five of us sat around the table she turned to me and said, "Tell us everything about your book."

For the next two hours we chatted and laughed about all kinds of things. It felt like I was sitting on The View or something being interviewed about my book. That was probably the coolest thing to do on my release day. They were excited about the fact I set a goal for myself and then worked until I achieved it.

We talked about loads of other things too, such as the conversation that went sort of like this:

Me: I used to have these weird urges to crash into the cars parked on the side of the road or get a monster truck to drive over them, but not any more.

Friend: No, now she just kills people.

Me: It's strangely therapeutic.

Ah, these new people get me so well. :)

Later that night we went to dinner as a family. I had planned on just ordering pizza, but hubby said we needed to actually go somewhere. He was right. It was much more fun and "official" leaving the house. The best part was we laughed and acted crazy just like we would at home.

Our waiter was wonderful with our silly antics and joined right in. In fact, he also made a comment about how I must be mildly violent because I ordered the squash and mashed potatoes. Do you think I have a problem?

We all ordered something with changes to the menu, we swapped food, we told our lame jokes and laughed until we couldn't breathe. We ate until we thought we would be sick. Then we came home to this nice surprise.
Hubby came home and decorated while I had little guy at taekwondo. Some of you may remember my "bubble popper" comment in regards to hubby. That made this treat all the more wonderful to me. He's NOT a bubble popper now.
I wore purple all day of course and one of Talia's necklaces. (This is the one review copy I have with the darker cover. I still need to grab an official copy for myself!)

After everyone gave helium talking a try (I know, bad parenting moment of the month) we ate ice cream cake and sent everyone to bed. That's when I logged on to check email, posts, etc. I found this on Facebook.
My friend Kathy's books showed up on her doorstep yesterday! She bought a book for herself and one to share. How cool is that?!

The Birth of My Debut Novel The Magic Wakes is TODAY!!

Release Day Tour Stops

Liz Fichera—Why I Chose to Give Back via Unicorn Bell
I guest blog over at SavvyAuthors on Finding Strength in the Journey

Birth of a Novel

I can't believe it's finally here! All those years of dreaming, hoping, crying and WORKING have finally paid off. *sigh* Today I'm going to enjoy every minute of it and then tomorrow I'll get back to my every day life.

Here's a run down of the last few weeks.

My blog tour has been so much fun! So many wonderful blogger friends have hosted me. I hope they all know how much I appreciate them. They've interviewed, reviewed, posted blurbs, excerpts, trailers, and posts on writing and publishing. I've been floating through the two weeks on a cloud of joy. Reading comments about how your book sounds interesting, or thanks for sharing my experiences, has been a huge ego boost. If you missed any of the stops you can get direct links to them from the Blog Tour Info tab.

Reviews have started coming in on Goodreads and Amazon. So far they have been positive and some included some honest notes on what didn't work for the reader. I really appreciate these as it will help me improve the next part of the story.

Some of my favorite bits of reviews:
"It's easy to create a heroine who is strong. Or is weak and becomes strong. But to take a person who is shy, sensitive, a social outcast, and anxious, and make her a heroine is a gift. It makes Talia relatable. She's real. I kept waiting for Talia to have an " I'm superwoman" moment. But she never does. She is always her. She is always insecure. And she is still the heroine. I am forever endeared to Talia Zarin."
______
"The characters are believable and complex, the world building is terrific, and I really enjoyed the way she blended two of my favorite genres: science fiction and urban fantasy."
______
"This book should come with a warning label. Once you begin reading, you will be pulled into the world of Sendek and you will not want to put this book down."
______
"With each page I turned, I found myself more and more excited, to discover what lay ahead for Talia and Landry. I also base a good book on my ability to dream about it at night, which may sound silly, but it helps me really understand the characters and their location. I wasn't disappointed, as I drifted off to sleep, I found myself in Sendek, surrounded by Dragumon, fighting for my life, although unlike Talia, I was unharmed when I woke."
Last night a box of books showed up at my door. It was the 5 free ones that I got with my contract. The kids gathered around and we opened them up. I should have taken a picture, but I was so excited to get them signed and in the envelopes I had waiting. Three people had already mailed me a check and I didn't want them to wait too long for the book.

Today I'm going to lunch with some friends and tonight we're ordering pizza.

And tomorrow?

Well, tomorrow I get serious about finishing the sequel. I've decided not to blog during the month of March and concentrate on finishing this draft. There are a few guest posts already scheduled, but for the most part things will be quiet around here. But I'll be back in April and blogging every day from A to Z.

I also wanted to take a moment today to tell all of you...

THANK YOU!!

You've all played an important role in my journey at one time or another. Comments, encouragement, laughs and tears. Thank you for sharing those moments with me.

Birth of a Novel January 2013 Progress with Flaws

I believe I'm going to start doing my Birth of a Novel posts just on the second Thursday of each month. It will make the labeling easier and I may have more to report by waiting a month.

Since it's been a few weeks, let's see if I can get caught up. Hm, yep, that about sums it up.

No writing so to speak until this past Monday, but the last few days have been a flurry of words. I've been working extensively on Fade Into Me. See the lovely word counters over in the sidebar? I had hoped to get it finished before ABNA, but that's not going to happen. And that's just fine.

The story is shaping up well. The first 100 pages are fairly polished even. That was Monday.

Tuesday I hit the end of the previous writing and reached the point where everything must be rewritten. I sort of dreaded it, but the last two days went well in spite of that. Why? Because I made myself sit down and keep writing. Whenever I got stuck I sat there and thought about my characters. What would they do in this situation. I mean really?

You see, I had stopped working on this wip because my characters changed (and it was boring). I've spent half a year thinking about them as individuals instead of as a couple. I discovered their fears and secret hopes, but most importantly I found their flaws. The previous draft was boring because there was no conflict.  Ryanne couldn't trust people, but Carter was perfect. Turns out that makes for a really annoying love interest.

Ryanne still finds it hard to trust because she now has some really dark things in her past. She also has some serious abandonment issues. But the real power boost to the story is Carter's flaws. He went from the attentive romantic to arrogant, stubborn, and blind to his own heart because he's always sought to fulfill his duty. It's providing a lot of great internal conflict as well as some punchy arguments. :)

My plan for the next month is simple. Write, write, write. I need to stay busy because February is so close and yet so far away! I'd love to reach THE END of this story before The Magic Wakes is released.

Which brings me to my question for you...

Would you like to host a blog tour post for me?

I had a blogger who needed to bow out of the blog tour. It wouldn't be a big deal, but they were the only one who chose to do the playlist post. I've already written it and could just post it myself, however, if anyone else wants to host it on their blog, I'd love to send it to you. Just shoot me an email. First come, first serve. :) charity.bradford @ gmail.com

UPDATE: I really have the best blogging buddies EVER! I had two offers before I woke up this morning. Rachel Morgan grabbed the music post. Thank you!

Birth of a Novel and the End of the World

Let's cover the end of the world tomorrow first. My 15 year old is SO excited about this. She's made all kinds of crazy plans for fun. Such as:
  • walking our dog while wearing her Phantom of the Opera cape
  • falling down "dead" in the middle of the sidewalk so she's ready when it happens
  • posting "still here" on facebook every 5 minutes
  • generally being annoying so that we hope for the end by the end of the day
Will any of us survive???

And now...
Last Week's Goals:
1. Work really hard on Fade Into Me. I'd like to add another 10K. Current word count is 24,267
2. Finish another 5 tour posts.
3. Contact those who offered to do Author Interviews and see if they will send the questions (Thank you to those of you that already have!)

I get a giant F for all of those, however it isn't really my fault. The day after setting those goals my computer refused to come on. Then on Saturday I received my galley to look over. Major stress out! How could I do what I needed without a computer?

Monday I dropped my baby off at a computer repair shop and hoped for the best. In the meantime, I tried to keep up with email, blogging, facebook, twitter, and read through my galley on my hubby's computer. Can you see why that wasn't very fun?
Somehow I survived and even managed to finish my read through and send my notes to my publisher.

A strange thing happened with this final read. I'm now terrified! This was my last chance to make any changes to my book before the general public gets access to it. Although I still LOVE my story, part of me wanted to rip it to shreds and start all over. I've learned a lot in the last few months since turning it over to my publisher. I know I can do better. But I'll always want to tweak and improve so it's time to let it go and put all this energy into the  next book. Make it better.

Holy cow it's crazy though. I didn't think I'd be such a wreck about people reading The Magic Wakes, but they are going to judge me by this story. If they hate it, they'll never give me another chance to show how I'm still growing and improving.

I think I'm going to need to join Alex's next Insecure Writers blog chain!

Okay, okay, new goals, or a second chance at the last ones.

This Week's Goals:
1. Work really hard on Fade Into Me. I'd like to add another 10K. Current word count is 24,267
2. Finish another 5 tour posts.
3. Have a wonderful Christmas week with my family

What are your goals? Or are you taking a break until January?

Birth of a Novel 12/13/12

What a good week! I feel like there were days I accomplished a lot, and others where I didn't. Life!

Don't forget to check out the Giveaways tab up top. You can win one of Talia's necklaces (for you or to give away), and now there's a Goodreads Giveaway where you can win 1 of 2 signed copies of The Magic Wakes.

There's also a new linky tool in the sidebar to sign up for this Birth of a Novel meme. We post on Thursday and it deals with any stage of the writing process that you may be in. Even if you don't want to participate, please visit the other bloggers and encourage them to keep working on their goals. Thanks!

Last Week's Goals:
1. I really need to come up with a birthday present for my hubby. And a really good Christmas present. (Still a big blank! I hope the new leather couch and loveseat will count for this since he picked them.)
2. Get back to the gym! Check! I did a mile and two classes on Monday and could barely walk on Tuesday. Did yoga on Wednesday, and plan on running today, water aerobics tomorrow.
3. Write 4 new scenes for Search for Knowledge: action scene with Landry, the new nightmare, the Code, and the ship. Um, Fail. But there's a good reason, see below.
4. Pull out Fade Into Me and re-evaluate what needs to be done. It was actually in pretty good shape. In fact I had already rewritten the first 80 pages out of the 147 I had. I got this crazy idea that maybe I can finish the rewrite this month, get it to crit partners, and enter it in the ABNA at the end of January. Yeah, I know, but there isn't anything to lose by trying.
5. Complete 4 of the Blog Tour draft posts. I now have 15/34 blog posts written with 10 drafts in the queue. 5 of the remaining 20 will be book reviews, and 6 will be author interviews so I'm not doing too bad. I also put together the tour package for those participating. I know those #s don't add up, but some are combination posts.

This Week's Goals:
1. Work really hard on Fade Into Me. I'd like to add another 10K. Current word count is 24,267
2. Finish another 5 tour posts.
3. Contact those who offered to do Author Interviews and see if they will send the questions (Thank you to those of you that already have!)

Birth of a Novel 12/6/12

Where did the week go? I can't believe it's already Thursday. How did you do on your goals?

There is a new linky tool in the sidebar to sign up for the Thursday Birth of a Novel meme. Even if you don't want to participate, please visit the other bloggers and encourage them to keep working on their goals. Thanks!

Last Week's Goals:
1. Continue the good exercise habits I've started by going to the gym and watching what I eat. Fail! I only exercised on Monday and Tuesday. Granted I felt sick yesterday, and my schedule is busy today.
2. Fill in the gaps between the new start of Search for Knowledge and the salvaged section. This should equate to two or three chapters. Fail! I kept opening the document and reading. What happens when you read? You start to revise. I've got to stop that or I'll never get the story finished.
3. Write 4 more of the guest blogs I've planned for my tour in addition to the ones I've started. I currently have six of them completed and six in draft form. That means I should have 16 completed by next Thursday. Success! Well, I'm counting it as a success. I have 10 complete posts, 1 tour package put together, and 6 posts in various levels of draft form.

This Week's Goals:
1. I really need to come up with a birthday present for my hubby. And a really good Christmas present.
2. Get back to the gym!
3. Write 4 new scenes for Search for Knowledge: action scene with Landry, the new nightmare, the Code, and the ship.
4. Pull out Fade Into Me and re-evaluate what needs to be done.
5. Complete 4 of the Blog Tour draft posts.

Birth of a Novel 11/29/12

It's been a very uplifting week for me. Since the last Birth of a Novel post I've pulled out my two year old 50K Nano draft of Search for Knowledge--the sequel to The Magic Wakes. I remember it being complete and utter trash. My plan was to look through it for anything I might be able to salvage for the rewrite.

Well, I started reading through it a little before Thanksgiving, and I'm happy to report that I was able to keep 37K of it! That stuff is still really rough, but the ideas are good and the character actions still fit in with who they are at the end of book one. I wrote a new beginning, and I now have a better planned goal for the second book in my series. All in all, I feel better prepared to sit down and finish this draft than I did a month ago.

Now I just need to fill in some gaps, switch from 1st person to 3rd, and finish the story. Then I'll be ready to let some of my early readers give me some feedback.

Okay, on to concrete goals!

Last Week's Goals:
1. Write at least 2500 words on Search for Knowledge. It's not a lot, but I still have some unpacking and Thanksgiving cooking to do. The plan is to just get started again. I did write a few scenes, but mostly I cut and pasted the salvageable stuff from the early version. So that counts as a start, right?
2. Finish unpacking and decorate for Christmas. We always do inside before Thanksgiving so it looks beautiful and festive when we sit down to eat, and outside after. I am unpacked! Decorations are up, and we survived a wonderful T-day with lots of food and relaxation. I'll try and get a video tour of my new place up next week.
3. Actually visit the other people that signed up for this thing I've started! Well, most of us didn't do anything last week, and now Mr. Linky is being stupid. Does anyone have a better linky widget that's free?

This Week's Goals:
1. Continue the good exercise habits I've started by going to the gym and watching what I eat.
2. Fill in the gaps between the new start of Search for Knowledge and the salvaged section. This should equate to two or three chapters.
3. Write 4 more of the guest blogs I've planned for my tour in addition to the ones I've started. I currently have six of them completed and six in draft form. That means I should have 16 completed by next Thursday.

How about you? What are your goals for this week?

Now I'm off to see how to fix Mr. Linky for the others in the blog hop.

Birth of a Novel Nov 15th

Moving update is included with last week's goals. :)

Last Week's Goals:
1. Get kids enrolled in new school--This took two days and a total of six and a half hours. Why? Because I have 4 kids. Each kid is now in a different school and rides a different bus. The lesson to be learned? Family planning IS important.
2. Unpack and get life back to a normal routine so I can write next week. I'm probably 3/4 of the way unpacked so this is pretty good. Unfortunately, I woke up with a stiff neck this morning and am going to soak in a hot bath and maybe not do anything else today to recover. Hey, that actually sounds pretty good!

This Week's Goals:
1. Write at least 2500 words on Search for Knowledge. It's not a lot, but I still have some unpacking and Thanksgiving cooking to do. The plan is to just get started again.
2. Finish unpacking and decorate for Christmas. We always do inside before Thanksgiving so it looks beautiful and festive when we sit down to eat, and outside after.

Birth of a Novel, Necklaces, and Moving

I'm writing this Wednesday night after a long day. The movers showed up at 9am and packed up my entire house by 2:30pm. They worked so fast, and I was so unprepared that by the time I thought of grabbing something to put in my van it was already packed.

Then we had several hours of saying good bye to various and dear friends. The last left our house around 10pm. The kids and I sat down and ate an entire container of ice cream and now they are all in bed. Tomorrow the movers will arrive at 8am and load everything into the truck. I'm estimating they will be done by 10am. I'll clean and then hope to head toward Tennessee and "Granny's House" by 1pm.

It's felt like a long week, but some fun stuff happened too. For instance, Sunday night my BFF came over to teach me how to make Talia's necklaces.

I'm going to be giving away some of these as part of my book release in February! A hand-made by the author, no two alike, amethyst necklace inspired by the one Talia wears in the book. This is probably one of the things I'm the most excited about because I love tangible things!

And now for...

Here is my report on goals, and new goals for the week:

Last week:
1. Finish my short story for the UB anthology--I did turn in my woefully short piece for comments from the other UB gals. They had some great advice. Now I just need more time.
2. Get Scrivener set up with my outline for Search for Knowledge--I didn't get to this, but that's okay. I am moving. I did open Scrivener a few times. The first time I finished writing the first scene. I also had a scare because I couldn't find the notebook where I had written the outline down, but I found it eventually.
3. Have my house cleaned so I can leave Thursday night or at least Friday morning to head for my new home. (at least the moving company will do all the packing)--This is a bit ahead of schedule thank goodness.

This Week's Goals:
1. Get kids enrolled in new school
2. Unpack and get life back to a normal routine so I can write next week.

It's a good thing I let myself off the Nanowrimo hook this year. I would like to get settled and try for 20K new words on Search for Knowledge this month though.
