My Eyes Have Been Opened By A Playlist

Seriously, how could I be so dense?

Weeks (months?) ago, one agent graciously rejected my partial and suggested I should market it as a paranormal romance instead of a YA fantasy. I was a little confused, but at the same time I figured she knew what she was talking about. Ever since then, I've put querying on hold as I let that bit of information sink in.

Today I was listening to my playlist for Fade Into Me. As I listened to this list (while cooking dinner) it finally sunk in. EVERY song is a love song.

I know this sounds silly, but I think this will help me finish polishing this story. There have been little bits that just WON'T be smoothed, and now I know why. I've been trying to fit my romance into a genre it didn't really fit. In fact, I sort of ignored a lot of the romance elements because I didn't want it to be a romance.

Time to face the facts. FIM is a romance with a younger protagonist. Plain and simple. I should roll with it.

  1. I've come to accept that my stories are heavy on the romance aspect, even though they're other things too. I just roll with it now. And I love how music plays such a huge role in my writing. Good luck!

    1. I never really plan on the romance, and I think that shows. Perhaps it's time I accepted it too and actually planned out the "steps" to the romance thread.

Good luck with your book release in October!

  2. Now you know! Make it happen.
My latest had an edge of something and I had to leave it at that - just an edge - because that's where it fit.

    1. Sometimes and edge is good! Mine, not so much. LOL. Time to "make it so!"

  3. Wow. Fascinating where inspiration comes from, isn't it?

    1. Yes! This is one reason I'm a radio "scanner". I don't listen to just one station, one style of music. You never know what tune or words are going to strike a cord.

  4. It's always nice to finally figure something out about a story we're stuck on. Good luck with getting everything smoothed out and it done. =)

    1. Thanks Patricia! *sigh* And to think I thought I was done with this one. Still going to revise Talia's next story as my main priority this month, but a little tweaking here and there should get Ryanne's story "out the door".

  5. Grooveshark? I'm so behind the times.

Must let the book be what it wants to be...

    1. Love Grooveshark! Go check it out. Still love Pandora too, but I use them for different things.

  6. Roll with it... yes.
It will unfold as it should... and be what it's meant to be.

    1. So true. I just wish I knew what it was meant to be much earlier. :)

  7. However it happens, it's great when the clouds disappear and there is nothing but blue sky in your story.
On a totally different note - I thought you might like to know that the new Doctor Who series gets underway in the UK from next weekend. The lead role is being played by a fellow Scot, a fine actor called Peter Capaldi. I'll keep you posted.

    1. I can barely wait to see how the new Doctor will work out. We like to joke about the fact Peter Capaldi was in the Pompeii episode so long ago.
