Birth of a Novel Summer 2015 Week 3

Week 3

  • Every Friday post a quick update on how you're doing on your writing projects.
  • It can be combined with Camp Nano or whatever personal goals you've set.
  • All you need is a line or two added to the beginning or end of whatever post you already had planned for the day.
  • Then visit the others in the list to encourage them to keep moving forward.
Help spread the word so we have more folks to visit.

This week went rather well. I wrote almost every day. Thursday was spent editing Search For Knowledge because I received two more critiques from Beta readers. Because of the wonderful people willing to read it and give me feedback, book 2 in Talia's series is slowly becoming something I'm more and more excited about.

I love filling in the little gaps to round out characters and plots. There are still scenes that need the edges knocked off, and other that could be sharpened a bit. All in all though, it's moving Talia in the right direction.

Working on edits of SFK is helping me stay grounded in Talia's world and making it easier to keep building her story in Demon Rising. Several times I had to tell myself to stop over thinking the plot and just write. This is a first draft after all.

Monday I asked one of my teen daughters to read the 4000+ words I had on Eleena's story. She's my target audience so I really wanted to see what she thought of the idea. To see if the beginning was enough to pull her in. My ego was bolstered by her reaction. The bit she read ended at the perfect cliff hanger and she's eagerly waiting for more.

AND...

You may have noticed a third counter in the sidebar. Addie's Song gained another 600 words this week. It's not an "official" project at the moment, but one day it will be so I gave it a word counter. A.S. will be a straight up contemporary YA.

Week 1 Stats:
Demon Rising--5475 words
Eleena's Tale--2119 words

Week 2 Stats:
Demon Rising--6718 (1243 word increase)
Eleena's Tale--4823 (2704 word increase)

Week 3 Stats:
Demon Rising--7705 (up 987 words)
Eleena's Tale--5738 (up 3034 words)
Addie's Song--1535 (up 935 words)
Plus SFK edits!

I had a good writing week. How about you?

  1. Well, your writing week was a bit more productive than mine, it seems. It's hard to get anything done with 10 kittens in the house.

  2. This week was a better week for me too! I started working on an older projects and added a nice word count. But you other WIP has been put on hold. I don't know how you can work on so many projects during the same week.

    1. Sometimes working on more than one helps. Eventually my mind will settle on one of them. It will get the majority of my time. I guess right now I'm trying to figure out what's the loudest in my head.

Well, I think it's Eleena, but I feel a responsibility to keep working on Talia's story too. Luckily, her story is fairly "present" right now.

  3. Just starting. *hangs head* and boy howdy, do I ever need help/ambition/a slap upside the head.
On the Need-to-Know front: I need to know the gadget showing your progress. That one right there on the right side, top.
    Can't find it anywhere.

    1. LOL, Here's a virtual slap up side the head and the link. You have to put in new numbers every time you update, but it's a nice visual.

  4. Way to go, Charity!
I didn't do much writing this week, but I worked on a lot of jewelry since i have a craft show coming up for 4th of July weekend. Yesterday, I did get a round of edits in and sent the story to my editor for a final proof.

  5. Don't overthink it! I know, easier said than done.
That's cool your daughter liked your new project.
I'm working on a short story right now, and I'd join you if it wasn't for posting on Fridays.

  6. Sounds like a good week. My polishing is going well, actually. I've hit some chapters that need minimal attention. This is nice after having to rewrite three chapters entirely.
